Women in the Taxi Industry: Celebrating Tracey and the Changing Face of London’s Black Cabs

The London taxi trade has long been a male-dominated industry, but times are changing. More and more women are entering the profession, proving that black cab driving offers a rewarding and flexible career for everyone. One of the key figures championing this change is Tracey, Sherbet London’s Driver Liaison Officer and Recruitment Specialist. With over 30 years in the trade and four years at Sherbet, Tracey has played an essential role in bringing thousands of new drivers—many of them women—into the industry.

More Than Just a Job—A Community

Being a taxi driver isn’t just about picking up passengers—it’s about being part of a community. The London taxi trade is built on camaraderie and support, and Tracey plays a huge role in fostering that spirit.

“If I didn’t have Tracey building those relationships with the drivers, they wouldn’t care about what ad was on their taxi,” one colleague explains. “They wouldn’t care about being the ambassador for that brand. Without Tracey, it doesn’t work.”

Tracey’s impact extends beyond recruitment. She is a trusted figure in the industry, someone drivers turn to for support, whether it’s sorting out paperwork, answering questions, or simply offering a friendly ear over a cup of tea. “Taxi drivers have got to know her,” another colleague shares. “Wherever she goes, they follow Tracey. And I’m so lucky to have had the opportunity to employ and work with her because wherever she goes, the taxi drivers come with her.”

A Thank You to the Backbone of the Industry

Despite her key role at Sherbet, Tracey is quick to acknowledge the people who make the industry what it is—the drivers. “I would actually like to say a big thank you to mainly the taxi drivers, because obviously, they’re the backbone of our business. All the charities, all the drivers that come together to support everything that happens in this industry—it’s such a lovely community.”

With organisations like Sherbet London, LEVC, and The Knowledge Schools all playing a part, the London taxi trade is evolving. More women are joining, more opportunities are opening up, and the community continues to thrive.

As we celebrate the women of Sherbet and beyond, it’s clear that the future of the taxi industry is one of inclusivity, flexibility, and opportunity. And with people like Tracey leading the way, that future looks brighter than ever.
